Dr. Edward R. McInnis, Lt. (N), MD, CCFP, has built a robust career in both family and emergency medicine. He has over a decade of experience in emergency and trauma and more than fifteen years of experience in family practice. His life outside of medicine is equally dynamic, encompassing roles as a father of four, an athlete, a lieutenant in the Canadian Armed Forces, a Navy reservist, and an active volunteer.

The Early Years

Hailing from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, as the eldest sibling in a family of four, Dr. McInnis has been passionate about sports since childhood. His athletic pursuits included competitive hockey and baseball, where he excelled to the extent of playing Junior A hockey and being scouted by the Boston Red Sox for his pitching skills. As he grew older, weightlifting became a part of his routine.

His strong work ethic was evident early on. He managed a paper route at age ten and worked full-time at McDonald’s by age thirteen.

Education, Professional Licensure and Certifications

Notable achievements mark Dr. McInnis’s educational path. He graduated with a BBA in 1992 from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, after which he traveled across the United States. He continued his education at Dalhousie University, earning a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics in 1997, followed by an Epidemiology Certification in 2002. He commenced his medical studies at Dalhousie in 2000, completing his Doctor of Medicine in 2004. His postgraduate training was conducted at McMaster University, where he specialized in Emergency and Family Medicine.

He has earned several important certifications and licenses, including his Medical Council of Canada licensure, his commission as sub-lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy, and his CCFP certification. He eventually was promoted to Lieutenant (N).

Honors and Awards

Dr. McInnis has received numerous accolades for his academic and professional contributions, including the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, and a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was also granted an Honorable Discharge from active service.

Academic Experience

His academic roles have been diverse, including Associate Professor at Dalhousie University’s Department of Biological Laboratory Studies, Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants.

Serving His Country

Dr. McInnis’s service to his country spans over a decade, including nine years as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and ongoing participation as a Class B reservist. His military roles have varied from serving soldiers at home and abroad to acting as a consultant in bio-terrorism and a clinical instructor for the Physician Assistant Program.

Clinical Experience and Medical Practice

His clinical career includes several years as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital before taking up a leadership role in family practice at the Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center. In 2010, he became a Class B reservist within the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Volunteer Work

Volunteering has been a significant part of his life. He has provided medical support at shelters in Halifax, Hamilton, and Toronto and worked to aid individuals exiting the sex trade. Additionally, he has tutored children in group homes, further demonstrating his commitment to community service.

A Family Man, A Man of Faith

Dr. McInnis is deeply committed to his family, comprising three daughters and a son, and actively participates in their various sports and recreational activities. He has coached hockey and volunteered for figure skating and dance programs for many years.

A devout Christian, he and his family are regular attendees at Mapleview Christian Church, reflecting his commitment to his faith.
